Indonesia: Catholic schools to offer Islamic instruction rather than shut down

January 22, 2013

Threatened with closure, administrators at six Catholic schools in Blitar, a city of 130,000 in East Java (Indonesia), have decided to offer instruction in Islam to their Muslim students.

A city ordinance requires all Muslim students, wherever they might be educated, to be able to read and write verse from the Quran.

Aan Ansori of the Islamic Anti-Discrimination Network countered, “Will Islamic schools, which are more exclusive than Catholic schools when it comes to accepting students of different faiths, also be required to provide Buddhist, Christian or Hindu lessons for their non-Muslim students?”
