Vatican delegate at UN condemns exploiting civilians in warfare

January 16, 2009

Archbishop Celestino Migliore, the permanent observer for the Holy See at UN headquarters in New York, has urged more strenuous efforts to protect civilians from military conflict. Speaking to the Security Council, the archbishop condemned the use of women and children to shield combatants. He cited some particular offenses against civilians: "when humanitarian access is denied in the Gaza Strip; when people are displaced and villages destroyed in Darfur and when we see sexual violence devastating the lives of women and children in the Democratic Republic of the Congo."
