Scholars, historians debate legacy of Pope Pius XII

Critics and defenders of Pope Pius XII clashed in a rare public debate in London on the late Pontiff’s response to the Holocaust.

Popular historian John Julian Norwich and international-law expert Geoffrey Robertson argued that Pope Pius XII failed in his responsibility to condemn the Nazis. William Doino and Ronald Rychlak, both biographers of the late Pontiff, argued that the criticisms of Pius XII are based on myths, while the actual historical record speaks strongly in his favor.
