Jerusalem Patriarch laments new violence, says 'comprehensive solution' needed

November 16, 2012

The Latin-rite Patriarch of Jerusalem has expressed his anguish over the latest outbreak of violence in Israel and Gaza, and said that the tensions in the region can only be resolved “a comprehensive solution that leads to a peace that is real and just for each of the parties involved.”

Archbishop Fouad Twal said that the rocket attacks on Israel and the responding fire on Gaza should not be surprising to those who understand the tensions there. “The situation was never calm or peaceful,” he said.

Just prior to the latest outbreak of violence, Archbishop Twal had remarked that tensions were rising in the region. He spoke of the “deep restlessness” that has now become more evidence because of the escalating violence.
