Cardinal Sarah, in Lebanon, begins mission to help Syrian refugees
November 08, 2012
Cardinal Robert Sarah, arriving in Lebanon as a special papal envoy to coordinate aid to the victims of Syria’s civil war, has begun that mission by meeting with Lebanon’s political and religious leaders.
Cardinal Sarah, the president of the Pontifical Council Cor Unum, conferred with President Michel Suleiman, with Orthodox Patriarch Ignatius IV Hazim of Antioch, and with the Armenian Catholic Patriarch Nerses Bedros XIX Tarmouni on his first day in Lebanon. The cardinal next traveled to Baalbek, in the northeast of the country, where Syrian refugee camps are located.
Cardinal Sarah is scheduled to chair an all-day planning conference on Friday for Catholic relief agencies involved in the effort to care for Syrian refugees and for those still suffering in Syria.
