Irish bishop reportedly knew of priest's abuse, before and after parish transfer
October 08, 2012
The Irish Times reports that Bishop John Kirby of Clonfert moved a priest to a new parish assignment in the 1990s despite knowing that the priest had been guilty of sexual abuse. The priest abused young people again in his new assignment, the Times claims.
Bishop Kirby, whose handling of sex-abuse cases came under heavy criticism in a September report from the National Board for Safeguarding Children in the Catholic Church, had previously said that he was unaware of any abuse by the priest after his transfer. The Times now reports that the bishop was aware of the later accusations.
