New York Times profile of Catholic physician

September 27, 2012

The New York Times has published a profile of Dr. Joseph Dutkowsky, a Catholic orthopedic surgeon who treats disabled children.

“This is my ministry,” said Dr. Dutkowsky, who has served as president of the American Academy for Cerebral Palsy and Developmental Medicine. “Some people stand next to the ocean to feel the presence of God. I get to see the likeness of God every day. I see children with some amazing deformities. But God doesn’t make mistakes. So they are the image.”

A very nice article by Samuel Freedman of the NYT about the inspiration and consolation Dr. Dutkowsky draws from his Catholic faith while treating seriously deformed people suffering from various bodily afflictions. Like his patron saint, Martin de Porres, who administered to the poor and the sick regardless of race, Dr. Dutkowsky looks beyond the physical deformity of his patients and sees in them God's sacred image wherein lies their inviolable human dignity.

Incredible article. First of all, no snarky comments at the end of the article, and no snarkiness in the article itself, perhaps a first for the Times. Second, this article is an answer to one of my prayers, in which I asked God who are the saints He is raising up in this scarred world. Here's one. We must pray for his perseverence in grace.
