Scottish bishop denounces abortion, gay-rights lobbies

September 24, 2012

A Scottish bishop has drawn public attention—and angry criticism—with his pointed criticism of groups lobbying for legal abortion and same-sex marriage.

"Why is the pro-choice lobby so desperate to hide the truth about abortion from the public?" asked Bishop Joseph Devine of Motherwell. He argued that the deliberate destruction of human life, and the effort to squelch public discussion of the killing, was reminiscent of the Nazi Holocaust. That comparison inflamed abortion supporters; a representative of the British Pregnancy Advisory Service called it “breathtakingly offensive.”

Bishop Devine made the comment in reaction to a court’s decision dismissing a complaint against pro-life activists who had displayed pictures of aborted babies outside an abortion clinic. The court’s action was a victory for free speech, the bishop said.

Moving to another case involving free speech, Bishop Devine scolded Green Party leaders for ousting a prominent member because she opposed same-sex marriage. The Green Party, the bishop said, seems to be “masquerading” as an environmentalist group when it shows more interest in promoting sexual license.
