Vatican releases details of Pope's pilgrimage to Loreto

September 20, 2012

The Vatican has released the schedule for an October 4 visit by Pope Benedict XVI to Loreto, Italy.

The Vatican announced on June 30 that the Pontiff would travel to the shrine of Our Lady of Loreto in early October, as part of his spiritual preparation for the Synod of Bishops, which will be meeting that month to discuss the “new evangelization.” The pilgrimage will replicate a visit that Blessed John XXIII made 50 years earlier, before opening the Second Vatican Council.

The Holy Father will leave Rome on Thursday morning and travel to Loreto by helicopter. He is scheduled to arrive shortly after 10 am, and travel immediately to the shrine of Our Lady of Loreto, where he will pray before the Blessed Sacrament. At 10:30 he will celebrate Mass at the plaza outside the shrine. Then he will have lunch at the shrine and return to Rome in the late afternoon.
