Catholic Relief Services responds to report on employees’ ties to pro-abortion organizations

August 27, 2012

Catholic Relief Services has responded to a LifeSiteNews.com report charging that the relief agency has a “history of hiring employees with strong ties to pro-abortion and pro-contraception organizations.”

The LifeSiteNews.com report discussed four employees. It noted, for example, that

Daphyne Williams, who has worked for CRS since 2008 and currently serves as the East Africa Regional Technical Advisor, interned at the Minneapolis-based pro-abortion group Pro-Choice Resources in 2001-2002, according to her LinkedIn page. The group is dedicated to expanding abortion access through programs such as the Hersey Abortion Assistance Fund, which provides “no-interest loans” and “grants” to help poor women pay for abortions.

From 2003-2004 Williams worked at the Sixteenth Street Community Health Center, which offers “the full range of reproductive health services including contraception.” And from 2004-2005 she worked in STD prevention at the Institute of Women and Ethnic Studies, a national public health organization that advocates for abortion access and links to leading pro-abortion and pro-homosexual groups.

“As is expected of all staff at CRS, Daphyne has carefully abided by all Church teaching in her work for CRS, adhering to CRS’ strong position against the use of contraceptives and abortions,” the agency responded. “As Regional Technical Advisor in the Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC) programs at CRS, she has provided strong support to improving the lives of orphaned children in East Africa.”

I would advise checking out Cross Catholic Outreach, very faithful to the Church's teaching, here: http://www.crosscatholic.org

LifeSite News says, "... on their website CRS explains that it “considers all applicants on the basis of merit without regard to race, national origin, religious beliefs, gender, age, marital status or physical or mental disability.” Why would a Catholic organization hire employees without regard to their religious beliefs? Perhaps the organization has another agenda instead of being Catholic!

CRS continues to use Planned Parenthood-like illogic to try to explain away one connection after another to abortion and contrceptive practices here and around the world. That said, please don't let the behavior of CRS stop us from donating to the many other faithful organizations that are constant in following our Lord's teavchings.

There is a credibility gap here in that the official response from CRS does not reflect a conversion of heart on the part of the indiidual in question. Daphyne's actions speak so loudly that I cannot hear the necessary repentance in CRS's response. Still no money. Period.

Is there proof of this woman's conversion? Has she publicly repudiated both abortion and contraception? Unless both, or at least the later, she should not be in a position of influence, or even involved in CRS.
