Mafia victim recognized as martyr

June 28, 2012

An Italian priest who was killed by the Mafia in 1993 has been recognized by the Vatican as a martyr for the faith.

The Congregation for the Causes of Saints announced on June 28 that Father Giuseppe Puglisi, who was shot and killed in Palermo, Sicily, was killed “out of hatred for the faith” and therefore qualifies as a martyr. Father Puglisi was a target of the Mafia because of his frequent public denunciations of organized crime.
