Cardinal Ravasi announces new Vatican effort in world of sports

June 14, 2012

Cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi, president of the Pontifical Council for Culture, has announced formation of a new office for “Culture and Sport” within his dicastery, paralleling the office for “Church and Sport” under the jurisdiction of the Pontifical Council for the Laity.

The purpose of the new Vatican office will be to gain a better understanding of the world of sports, with the goal of evangelization. Cardinal Ravasi said that the new initiative falls in line with his plans for a “Court of the Gentiles,” in which believers and non-believers can find common ground for dialogue.
