Cuban opposition group ‘happy’ following meeting with Cardinal Ortega

June 08, 2012

Cardinal Jaime Ortega y Alamino, under fire from some political dissidents for not being more vocally opposed to the Castro regime, has won praise from the leadership of prominent opposition group Ladies in White following a lengthy meeting.

“It was an open dialogue where he listened to us and we listened to him,” one of the group’s leaders said. “We are very happy.”

Expressing gratitude for past assistance from the cardinal, she said that “it would be good if he can intercede, if not to stop the repression at least to lower it.”

“The freedom of the political prisoners is in the hands not of the cardinal but of the government of Cuba,” she added.
