California man's healing could lead to beatification of German chaplain at Nazi prison camps

April 18, 2012

The Vatican is investigating the inexplicable healing of a California man from stomach cancer, which could be approved as the miracle required for the beatification of Father Franz Stock, a German army chaplain who served prisoners in Nazi prison camps.

Father Stock, who died in 1948, was known by prisoners as an “archangel in hell” because of his kindness to thousands of prisoners, including hundreds to whom he administered the sacraments before their execution.

The reported miracle involves a man who was thought close to death from stomach cancer. After relatives prayed for the intercession of Father Stock, the man recovered completely, and 15 years later he is married, the father of 2 children, and cancer-free. Doctors have not been able to give any explanation for his recovery.
