Focolare movement seen a growing influence inside Vatican

April 06, 2012

Anna Maria and Danilo Zanzucchi, the Italian married couple chosen by Pope Benedict XVI to write the meditations for the Stations of the Cross at the Roman Coliseum on Good Friday, are affiliated with the Focolare movement, notes Sandro Magister of L’Espresso. The veteran Vatican-watcher uses the occasion to comment on the growing influence of Focolare inside the Vatican.

Cardinal Joao Braz de Aviz, the prefect of the Congregation for Clergy is associated with Focolare, as is Cardinal Ennio Antonelli, the president of the Pontifical Council for the Family. Perhaps more important, so is Archbishop Giovanni Becciu, the sostituto, whose office handles all the important correspondence that passes through the Roman Curia.
