Police in Sonora, Mexico have arrested 8 people in connection with an investigation into human sacrifices performed by the cult of Santa Muerte.
The Santa Muerte (“Saint Death”) cult, which combines pagan and Christian elements, has been popularized by criminal gangs, especially those associated with drug trafficking. The Archdiocese of Mexico City has denounced the cult as “not only superstitious, but diabolical.”
Police in Sonora reported that some of the people arrested had confessed to involvement in the ritual killing of 2 children and an adult woman; they are also suspected in the disappearance of another young boy.
