Plans move forward for 2013 World Youth Day in Brazil

April 02, 2012

At an April 2 press conference in Rome, Church leaders outlined preparations for the international celebration of World Youth Day (WYD) that will take place in July 2013 in Rio de Janeiro.

Cardinal Stanislaw Rylko, the president of the Pontifical Council for the Laity, said that the main purpose of WYD is to rally the enthusiasm of young people for the mission of evangelization. Noting that the WYD celebration in Rio de Janeiro will take place during the Year of Faith, he said the theme will be linked to the New Evangelization.

Archbishop Orani Joao Tempesta of Rio de Janeiro reported that a web site providing advance information about the WYD activities has been set up, serving internet users in 5 different languages. A Facebook page for WYD already has 600,000 followers.
