Vatican cancels conference on stem-cell research; embryo researchers had been on agenda

March 26, 2012

The Vatican has cancelled plans for a conference on stem-cell research, at which proponents of embryo research were scheduled to speak.

The conference, organized by the Pontifical Academy for Life, had been planned for April 25-28. Participants have been informed that the event will not take place, and promised a full explanation at some future date. Informed sources suggest that the conference was scrubbed because of concern that the participation of scientists actively engaged in embryonic stem-cell research would have sent a confusing message about the Church’s teaching.
