The bishops of Argentina have denounced a Supreme Court decision that has legalized abortion in cases of rape.
“Abortion is the killing of an innocent life, and no grounds or reason can justify the elimination of an innocent life, not even in the sad or deplorable case of violence,” the bishops said in a statement.
Both mother and child, the bishops added, “should be protected and respected. Biology demonstrates this in a surprising way. We see by way of DNA, with the human genome sequence, that from the moment of conception there is new human life that should thus be protected by the law. The right to life is a fundamental human right.”

Rape is such a violent and degrading act; it is horrific to consider it can be followed by the equally violent act of taking a child's life - making 2 victims of such viciousness. As an early feminist, I remember the mantra we chanted regarding rape: 'don't blame the victim'. We seem to have forgottwen our own words - or more importantly, our Lord's words: do not kill! Watching someone take a child's innocent life must evoke so much sadness -and anger- from our Lord. Pray!
