Eucharistic Congress will bring renewal to Irish Church, archbishop believes
March 14, 2012
Dublin’s Archbishop Diarmuid Martin reported that “there is a real sense of renewal in the Church in Ireland” as the nation awaits the opening of the International Eucharistic Congress, which will be held in Dublin in June.
Archbishop Martin led a delegation from Ireland to meet with Pope Benedict XVI at the Vatican on March 14. The group brought the “International Eucharistic Congress Bell,” a symbol of the event that was chosen to reflect the work of St. Patrick, who left a bell with each Christian community he founded in Ireland.
The bell has been brought on a tour around Ireland in preparation for the Eucharistic Congress, and an estimated 250,000 people have rung it, in a symbolic act expressing their hope for renewal in the Irish Church. Pope Benedict joined the bell-ringers just before his public audience on March 14.
