Pope to meet Fidel Castro during March visit to Cuba?

February 21, 2012

Pope Benedict XVI hopes to meet with Fidel Castro during his visit to Cuba next month, according to unnamed Vatican sources. The Pontiff is already scheduled to meet with Raul Castro, the brother and successor of the longtime Cuban leader.

The papal visit will provide an opportunity to assess the growing influence of the Catholic Church in the years since Pope John Paul II visited the island in 1998. The Church is the largest institution not controlled by the government, and has emerged as an important broker in public affairs.
