Vatican insiders see 'mutiny' within Roman Curia

February 13, 2012

A recent spate of leaked documents, and a rise in public criticism of the Secretariat of State, are evidence of a “mutiny of the monsignors” within the Vatican, according to a Reuters news report.

Reuters quotes unnamed Vatican officials as saying that the unusual public signs of intramural conflict reflect a widespread dissatisfaction among mid-level Vatican officials over the leadership of Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, the Secretary of State.

The conflicts are coming to a head as Rome prepares for a consistory and the elevation of new cardinals. "This consistory will be taking place in an atmosphere that is certainly not very glorious or exalting," because of the messy disputes, one unnamed bishop told Reuters.
