Weigel: Obama policy furthers sexual license, restricts religious liberty

February 13, 2012

Author George Weigel argues that the HHS mandate is fully in line with an overall drive by the Obama administration to advance the sexual revolution, eliminating all obstacles to the individual's freedom to engage in unrestricted recreational sex.

At the same time, Weigel observes, the Obama administration has advanced a very restricted idea of religious liberty. While pursuing a foreign policy that makes the rights of homosexuals a high priority, the administration has operated on the premise that religious freedom extends only to church services:

On numerous occasions, the secretary of state has declined to speak of “religious freedom,” but has referred to “freedom of worship.” Thus religious freedom is rendered a kind of privacy right that can be upheld so long as what happens religiously takes place out of the public square.
