Cardinal Bertone, Vatican Secretary of State, hitting stride on 77th birthday

December 02, 2011

Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, the Vatican Secretary of State, celebrates his 77th birthday today. Although the Vatican's #2 official submitted his resignation to Pope Benedict when he turned 75, as required by canon law, the Pontiff refused to accept it and appears determined to keep Cardinal Bertone in his current spot throughout his pontificate.

Top Vatican-watching journalist Andrea Tornielli says that Cardinal Bertone is consolidating his power within the Vatican.

Cardinal Bertone is a good man, but he is an inept Secretary of State and it is no mistake that the journalist to whom he feeds information would tout the Cardinal's clout. I wonder what Monsignor CB thinks?
