Sri Lanka: police charge Missionaries of Charity with adoption profiteering

A superior of the Missionaries of Charity has been arrested in Sri Lanka, and charged with selling children to adoptive parents.
Sister Mary Eliza was jailed after a police raid on a home for unwed mothers run by the Missionaries of Charity, the religious order founded by Mother Teresa of Calcutta. Authorities charged that she was seeking profit through adoptions, and “selling the future of the country to foreigners.”
Before being taken into custody, Sister Eliza issued a statement denying the charges. “We have never taken money for our work,” she insisted. “Children are adopted in accordance with the law.”
Other members of the Missionaries of Charity suggested the police raid may have been prompted by overcrowding at the shelter, or by faulty record-keeping.
