Weigel welcomes proposal to cut down number of Irish dioceses

November 23, 2011

Columnist George Weigel welcomes reports that the Vatican is planning to pare the Irish hierarchy by cutting down the number of dioceses in the country.

"That there are 26 dioceses in Ireland is manifestly absurd," Weigel writes, given the population of only 4.6 million. Noting that the crisis of Catholicism underlines the need for new episcopal leadership, he goes on to say: "That many Irish bishops are resisting proposals for downsizing the number of Irish dioceses confirms the impression that the present Irish episcopal bench must be cleared."
