Coptic leader heads to US for medical tests

November 16, 2011

The head of the Coptic Orthodox Church, Pope Shenouda III, is traveling to the US for medical tests and treatment.

Having been selected to head the Coptic Church in November 1971, Pope Shenouda has served for a remarkable 40 years. He is now 88 years old.

In recent weeks the Coptic leader has traveled a delicate path, pleading with the Egyptian government for protection of the Christian minority while urging Copts to participate in the electoral process and respect the military government.
