Hungarian cardinal named to investigate Peruvian Catholic university

October 20, 2011

Cardinal Peter Erdo of Budapest, Hungary, has been named by the Vatican to conduct an apostolic visitation of the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru.

The status of the university as a recognized pontifical institution has been jeopardized by the faculty’s refusal to amend the school’s organizing statutes, bringing them into line with the apostolic constitution Ex Corde Ecclesiae. The conflict between the school and the hierarchy can be traced back at least until 2007, when the Catholic University refused to seat the Archbishop of Lima on its board of directors, in apparent defiance of the terms of a major donor’s bequest.
