News service pays tribute to pro-abortion Catholic politician

In an article that is appearing in diocesan newspapers across the United States, Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis is presented as a model Catholic politician. The article begins:
The office of Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis includes images of Our Lady of Guadalupe, a glass crucifix and a sculpture of Mary and Jesus. Her Catholic faith, she said, "is a part of my life. My faith is what motivates me."The laudatory profile by Catholic News Service, an independent division of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, fails to mention Solis’s record on the sanctity of life: she has earned a 100% rating from NARAL Pro-Choice America for her uncompromising support of legalized abortion. While serving as a congresswoman from California, she opposed restrictions on partial-birth abortion.
The lessons her faith teaches about hope, about helping others, about seeking higher things is something woven into the fabric of her daily life, she said. "I do it in a quiet way," she said.

The claim to being "financially self-sustaining" is artificial when you take into consideration the fact that the dioceses, under the direction of their bishops, subscribe to this soi-disant "CATHOLIC News Service" and presumably pay for it. Obviously, the bishops go-along-to-get-along with the USCCB. In turn, the dioceses have the parishes subscribe, either voluntarily or not, to their diocesan papers which print the effluent from CNS. It would be very interesting to see a funding breakdown.

Is there an address you can provide me with so I can write to protest this printing of false image in Catholic news papers? It is truly outrageous and something must be done to stop these out-of-control bishops.

Hilda Solis was my congresswoman -- and (shame on me!) I voted for her. As a pro-life feminist and woman of the left, I believed that I agreed with Ms. Solis on most issues other than abortion. As of the 2010 election, I now know better that I must vote blank ballots till there are viable pro-life Democratic, Green or other left-wing third-party candidates. (GOP candidates are not an option for me.)

How can you possibly say that CNS is "an independent division" of the USCCB? It functions under the USCCB and the bishops are responsible for the material it publishes. In effect, because the CNS output (inane at best and often misleading, as this piece is) is used by diocesan papers all over the country, it's almost functioning as a de facto national Catholic newspaper.
