Nepal will not send delegation to World Youth Day

July 29, 2011

The Church in Nepal will not be sending young people to attend World Youth Day in Madrid in August.

“Our youths are simply not ready to attend World Youth Day this time,” said Bishop Anthony Sharma.

“Our talented youth should first get to know each other at our own national level and bloom at local Church levels,” added Father Robin Rai, the national youth chaplain. “Before going to international events, we are focusing on spirituality and more unification among our youth.”

“We are not strong enough financially and have to first form our own base here,” he continued. “There will be enough chances for participation in WYD and other meetings after we slowly build up through the Asian level.”

UCA News reported that nearly three dozen youth associated with the Neocatechumenal Way will reportedly attend World Youth Day on their own, heightening tensions between the movement and some local priests.
