Catholic University to pursue single-sex dorms despite threat of lawsuit

July 20, 2011

Officials at the Catholic University of America have confirmed that the school will follow through on a plan to convert all dormitories into single-sex residences, despite a lawsuit aimed to stop the move.

John Banzhaf, a professor a George Washington University law school, has filed a complaint, charging that the single-sex dorms will constitute a form of sex discrimination. Catholic University officials say they are confident the new policy will meet all applicable legal standards.

John Garvey, the president of Catholic University, announced plans for the single-sex dorm policy last month, saying that he was persuaded by studies that show binge drinking is more commonplace in coed dorms.
