San Diego parish cancels funeral Mass for owner of ‘gay bar’

June 28, 2011

A parish in San Diego has canceled the funeral Mass of a parishioner who owned a lounge described in online reviews as a “legendary gay and lesbian bar.” Our Lady of the Rosary Church, the city’s Italian parish, is staffed by Barnabite priests.

The Diocese of San Diego has apparently overruled the decision of the parish's pastor: diocesan chancellor Rodrigo Valdivia told a local television station that “diocesan authorities have concluded that the funeral as scheduled at Our Lady of the Rosary Parish may take place.”

Since we do not know the state of the person's soul at the time of death, I think a simple funeral Mass is always the right thing to do.
