Spanish priests' group protests corporate sponsorship of World Youth Day

June 22, 2011

A small group of Spanish priests is criticizing the organizers of a papal visit for recruiting corporate sponsors.

The Priests of Madrid Forum has written an open letter to Cardinal Antonio Maria Rouco Varela, complaining that in preparations for World Youth Day in August, organizers have made “a pact with the economic and political powers which reinforces the image of the Church as a privileged institution, close to power, and the social scandal this implies, especially in the context of the economic crisis."

The complaint relates to a “sponsors” page on the web site of the Madrid World Youth Day, which presents the logos of corporations that have donated to the project. Only logos--not advertisements for products--appear, on a page separate from the main site.
