Why Catholic University is returning to same-sex dorms

John Garvey, the president of Catholic University of America, explained in a Wall Street Journal column that the school will house all incoming freshmen in same-sex dorms. He points to studies showing that students in coed dorms are not only more likely to be sexually active, but also more likely to engage in binge drinking.
"I would have thought that young women would have a civilizing influence on young men," Garvey writes. "Yet the causal arrow seems to run the other way. Young women are trying to keep up..."

Catholic University could also eschew young women, apparently from the dorms nearby, lolling on the lawn in bikinis in front of the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception on summer Sunday mornings. Last year my husband and I were walking to Mass there and we were astonished at the sight. Young seminarians and priests strolling past didn't give them a glance but it was extraordinary custody of the eyes. Do they drop in for Mass similarly clad?

Common sense would indicate this would be physically safer for women and spiritually safer for both men nd women. A good decision and one that should serve as a model for other Catholic schools.

I read Mr. Garvey's column this morning. His reasons for going back to single-sex dorms are all good ones, but what if co-ed dorms did nothing to contribute to binge drinking or promiscuity? I mean, why doesn't he just come out and say that co-ed dorms are wrong, especially for a Catholic college?
