Bishop laments plight of thousands in Ivory Coast

Thousands of people who fled their homes in the wake of post-election violence in the Ivory Coast are living in appalling conditions, a bishop reports.
“The situation gets more and more dramatic: 27,000 people living within the space of a small parish,” says Bishop Gaspard Gnéba of Man, referring to the plight of supporters of former President Laurent Gbagbo. “Each of them lives in just a square meter. The sanitary and health conditions are so poor.”
“The real problem is that these people have no home to go back to because their homes have been ransacked, destroyed and burned,” the bishop added. “It is urgent to find another place for these people, as well as guaranteeing security to those who still have a home and want to return. You then need to rebuild destroyed homes.”
