New Vatican prefect described as China expert who ‘holds fast to principles’

May 12, 2011

Informed observers are praising the newly-appointed Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples as an expert on the Church in China. Pope Benedict appointed Archbishop Fernando Filoni as prefect on May 10; he had previously served as sostituto (deputy Secretary of State).

UCA News reported that from 1992 to 2001, Archbishop Filoni “acted as the Pope’s link with the ‘open’ and ‘underground’ Church communities in mainland China.” Anthony Lam Sui-ki, senior researcher at the Diocese of Hong Kong’s Holy Spirit Study Centre, described Archbishop Filoni as a “courageous figure who holds fast to principles.”
