Woman 'bishop' wants deconstruction of Catholic Church

April 19, 2011

An Atlanta, Georgia television station reports on the aspiration of a local woman to be ordained as a Catholic priest. The report suggests that her aspiration will be fulfilled--although the ordination ceremony will be held in the Sarasota United Church of Christ, which should be a clear indication that it is not a Catholic ceremony.

The WSBTV report contains this fascinating paragraph:

Bridget Mary Meehan is a bishop with the group but she doesn’t want to be called bishop. Meehan told Pearson, “We are trying to deconstruct the clerical hierarchal church.”

How many Catholic bishops seem intent on doing something similar (e.g., driving the laity away, not denying communion to errant politicians, etc, etc, etc)?

I think she's trying to live out Groucho Marx's famous quip: She would never join any club that would be willing to have someone like her as a member!

That's funny, I was just named the starting first baseman for the Boston Red Sox, a long-held aspiration of mine, although my first game is to be played at the local Little League field. Go figure.

Wouldn't it be easier to just start her own church?

“We are trying to deconstruct the clerical hierarchal church.” They sure are.
