Beatification cause for Archbishop Sheen advancing

The cause for beatification of Archbishop Fulton Sheen will move forward in May, when Bishop Daniel Jenky of Peoria, Illinois, files a dossier with the Vatican’s Congregation for the Causes of Saints.

The dossier, or positio summarizes the case for beatification of Archbishop Sheen, who was renowned for his writing, his conversions, and his popular television show, “Life is Worth Living.” The position reflects the findings of a preliminary investigation in the Peoria diocese. The Vatican will make its own investigation if the cause moves forward. Work on the cause of Archbishop Sheen’s beatification was suspended last November because of a conflict between the Diocese of Peoria and the Archdiocese of New York.

Archbishop Sheen was born and ordained in the Peoria diocese. He became an auxiliary bishop of New York in 1951, and served there until 1966, when he became Bishop of Rochester, holding that post until he retired in 1969. He is buried in New York’s St. Patrick’s cathedral.
