US closing embassy at Vatican? That's not the real story.

By Phil Lawler ( bio - articles - email ) | Nov 26, 2013

The US is closing down its embassy at the Vatican. That story is all over the media today.

That story is wrong.

There is a story here. The Obama administration does seem to be downgrading the importance of relations with the Holy See. But the embassy isn’t being closed. Before protesting, let’s make sure we have the facts straight.

The real story, which the secular media are botching this week, was covered—accurately—by CWN last week.

I can certainly understand why Obama might want to downgrade the importance of relations with the Vatican. After all, Pope Francis is no Rev. Wright.
