Support Komen against Planned Parenthood pressure--update--too late?

By Phil Lawler ( bio - articles - email ) | Feb 03, 2012

The Komen Foundation is being hammered for its decision to drop funding of Planned Parenthood. Hell hath no fury like Planned Parenthood when it’s deprived of the money it considers its due.

(For those who don’t know the history here, Komen was giving PP funds for breast-cancer screening. PP clinics generally don’t do breast-cancer screening; they just refer women somewhere else. But they were happy to take the Komen checks, and irate that they’re no longer coming.)

Pro-lifers need to send Komen a strong message of support, counterbalance the vitriolic reaction. Go to I Stand with Komen, add your name, and then tell your friends to do the same.

Update: It may already be too late--unless Komen is being very clever. Apparently knuckling under to the political pressure , Komen has announced that it regrets the furor and will reconsider funding for Planned Parenthood. But here's the catch: Komen wants to send its grants for breast-cancer screening to an organization that does breast-cancer screening. That's not an unreasonable criterion, but it's one that could assure PP doesn't receive any more funding.

Particularly since last year calls were made to PP across the country and not one PP office said they do mammograms: Just the opposite. Because that is the real truth PP won't like this new idea of Komen's.
