Desperate for new witnesses who will join in the calls for the Pope's resignation, the media have rediscovered Hans Küng, who-- having honed his skills through decades of complaints that his old faculty colleague is responsible for all the world's ills-- sure, enough, thinks the Pope should resign. 

In other news, the sun rose in the east again this morning.

Hans Küng, for those who don't know him, began pressing for the resignation of Benedict XVI about 25 minutes after the last papal election. Before that, he was telling the world that John Paul II wasn't fit for the job. 

And speaking of people who wanted to get John Paul II out of the way, the media outdid themselves by broadcasting the opinion of the would-be papal assassin, Mehmet Ali Agca. He too thinks Benedict XVI should resign. This time, he implemented his plan to replace the Pontiff by calling a press conference: surely a step in the right direction.

The AP story instructs us that Agca now advertises himself as a messenger from God. That would give his opinion considerable weight, except that, as AP solemnly warns us: "There are questions about Agca's mental health."
