Make way for pedophiles

By Phil Lawler ( bio - articles - email ) | Jun 12, 2003

Some members of the American Psychiatric Association are making the argument that pedophilia should not be classified as a disorder.

(Does that sound outlandish? Couldn't possibly happen? Keep in mind that not so many years ago, the same group suddenly decided that homosexuality should not be considered a disorder.)

If the proponents of change have their way, and pedophilia is recognized by the APA as just another "alternative," the move would raise a few questions. Such as:

" Would pedophilia then be considered acceptable for everyone except Catholic priests? " Would the US bishops continue to take advice from mainstream members of a same group that saw no serious problem with pedophilia?

And before you dismiss that second question as absurd, read that article, and pay special attention to the remarks by Dr. Fred Berlin, who has been a consultant to the US bishops in their efforts to address the sex-abuse scandal.

Dr. Berlin doesn't think child-abuse should be treated as a moral issue. And our bishops are listening to him. Still.
