Catholic Charities USA is hosting a reception on Capitol Hill next week, to jolly up Congressmen and their staff aides. When Washington groups throw parties of this sort, they often ask friendly lawmakers to sponsor the event, so that they can use rooms in the Congressional office buildings. And that's exactly what Catholic Charities has done for this reception. The friendly lawmakers chosen to host this event are Senators Dick Durbin and Arlen Specter.

Catholic Charities presumably wanted to strike a bipartisan note, and so two senators were recruited as hosts: one Democrat (Durbin) and one Republican (Specter).  It's a bit embarrassing that after signing up for the gig, Sen. Specter switched his party allegiance, so the sponsorship is now solidly Democratic. 

But even before he decided to become a Democrat, Specter was strongly in favor of legal abortion-- as is Durbin. Come to think of it, what's more embarrassing: having a Catholic Charities event hosted by two pro-abortion Democrats, or an event hosted by one pro-abortion Democrat and one pro-abortion Republican? Do the party labels really matter?
