"some have been alarmed..."

By Diogenes ( articles ) | May 06, 2003

The Jesuit Urban Center won the coveted "Best Place to Meet a Mate -- Gay" award bestowed by Boston Magazine some years ago. Yet those who worship there will find not only romance but cutting-edge scriptural exegesis, as evidenced by this Palm Sunday homily delivered by the Rev. Tom Carroll, S.J.

In the wider ecclesial arena, we find ourselves struggling. We ever hope to hear in the official voice of the Church a word that sustains the weary, yet we sometimes hear a tone and a message as wearying as any Jesus encountered in the voice of the religious leadership of his time. Some have been alarmed both by a Lexicon, sharply clarifying ambiguous and debated terms on family life and ethical questions, recently released by the Pontifical Council for the Family, and by a proposed Vatican document on the admission of homosexuals to Catholic seminaries and orders. The Church teaches authentically when it teaches as Jesus taught, sustaining the weary, encouraging even struggling believers. Let us continue to call one another, our nation, and our Church to embrace the goals and strategies of Jesus.
