Obama team gives religious freedom a combination punch

By Phil Lawler ( bio - articles - email ) | Jan 20, 2012

This is a one-two punch against religious freedom: The Obama administration refuses to exempt religious institutions from a new rule requiring contraceptive coverage in health-care plans, but cynically allows those institutions a one-year “exemption” from the rule—so that this assault on conscience won’t become a major issue in an election year.

And what were we just saying? If Republican presidential candidates don’t immediately seize this issue and run with it, we’ll know we’re in trouble.

While an Archbishop, Cardinal Raymond Burke, the prefect of the Apostolic Signatura, attributed the confusion and massive support among Catholics for Barack Obama to the USCCB’s Faithful Citizenship document. If today’s primary intrinsic evil were Black slavery instead of abortion, I believe the confusion would end.  The Bishops would then find the right words to make a clear distinction between intrinsic evils versus other matters about which Catholics may in good conscience reasonably disagree

Catholics elected Obama. And the problem was not political, it was spiritual. There were signs that the President was divergent from essential Catholic values from the beginning, but the Church in the main allowed Herself to be deceived. Unless you admit an action is a "sin" you will sin again. The utopian/socialist tendencies of the Church border on heresy. Until this is repented of, if it is not Obama it will merely be "someone else..."
