eNewsletter Subject: When religion goes public

A great many issues in our secular world revolve around the public presence of religion.

We begin in France, where a leading political figure has called for a ban on all public displays of religious identity. See my commentary in Religion in public? Our modern political stupor.

I also comment on Pope Francis’ plan to speak on the corporal and spiritual works of mercy. Public reaction to some of these is quite hostile, especially instructing the ignorant and counseling the doubtful. See Explaining the spiritual works of mercy: An opportunity for Pope Francis.

Our own mission at CatholicCulture.org seeks to put a public face on these two spiritual works. I'm glad to note that we've matched the first $5,000 of our $50,000 Challenge Grant.
