In the aftermath of my own vacation and the extended American Independence Day weekend, we have been mostly playing catchup this week. However, I did find some time to offer my thoughts on a complaint we hear too often from readers.

There is also a great deal of very interesting news today—much of it bad, unfortunately. But the following stories represent quite a range:
- Over 1 million attend papal Mass in Quito: This is good news indeed
- So what did Pope Francis ask for on this occasion? Pray for a miracle at the October Synod, Pope asks massive congregation in Ecuador
- Now, some bad news: Chairman of Fordham theology department enters into same-sex marriage (in case you wondered, yes, moral turpitude has always been at the root of the Catholic academic crisis in moral theology.)
- So let us balance this with a more endearing academic story: Pope Emeritus Benedict speaks on sacred music
