Man is a political animal, and it is very hard for him to keep his politics out of his religion. A typically unfortunate example of this is the current struggle in Crimea. Consider these two recent news stories:
- Report: Russian Orthodox move to seize other churches in Crimea
- Crimean bishop compares situation to Gethsemane
In addition to such flagrant marriages of politics and religion, I often wonder about the reluctance of bishops living under the soft-totalitarianisms of the West to give up the status of political “players”.
Here is a recent example from Europe: European bishops’ body urges voters to support European Union. Where does good citizenship end and sycophancy begin?...
