As we celebrated the national holiday of Labor Day in the United States, Catholic news did not slow down. Consider, for example, that the Archdiocese of Milwaukee has announced plans to close more than half of its parishes. This is a sad tribute, in large part at least, to the era of Archbishop Rembert Weakland (1977-2002), who was one of the more scandalous prelates in American Church history.

We also note with sadness the departure of Fr. Benedict Groeschel from his show on EWTN. But considering the problems caused by his recent unguarded remarks as his mental acuity has declined with age, it was unfortunately time for him to take this step.

We've also had a chance, with the help of good tips from some of our friends, to review the Democratic Party's Platform. It is not pretty: Democratic platform endorses unrestricted abortion, same-sex marriage.

Let me pause here to note that if the Democrats have given up all pretense of wanting to make abortion as rare as possible (which they have, in the Platform), and if more Republicans are moving toward Romney's temptation to rest content with the status quo, then we are witnessing a significant political shift for the worse in American party politics....
