SSPX condemns 'heresy' by head of German bishops' conference
April 28, 2009
The traditionalist Society of St. Pius X (SSPX) in Germany has condemned as "heresy" statements made by Archbishop Robert Zollitsch of Freiburg, who told a television audience that Jesus "did not die for the sins of the people" but rather to show "solidarity" with the poor and those who suffer. In his television appearance, which took place on Holy Saturday, the archbishop was asked about the significance of Good Friday:
"You would now no longer describe it in such a way that God gave his own son, because we humans were so sinful? You would no longer describe it like this?"
Archbishop Zollitsch answered "No."
The SSPX has suggested that the archbishop-- who is president of the German bishops' conference-- should renounce and atone for his public statement.
